Project Details:

Objective: Migration of Cognos and Excel Reports to PowerBI and creating dashboards as per client’s requirement.

Project Development Process:

  • Requirement Gathering:
    • Receiving a list of Cognos reports from the client indicating which reports must be migrated
    • Analysing the reports and understanding the business requirements

Data Profiling:

    • Interacting with the Cognos team to understand more about the business logic, report structure, and SQL logic of the reports.

Data Mining:

    • SSMS and SSDT can be used to analyse MDX cubes.
    • Create documents with dimensions, measures, and KPIs.

Data Analysis:

    • Writing SQL queries in Legacy (Existing Source) and validating the results with Cognos reports, creating joins between tables to retrieve the data, using SQL Functions to optimise the query.
    • Analysis of the gap between legacy and cloud query results so that the query can be replicated in the cloud.
    • Find the most relevant tables in the cloud to be used in an SQL query.
    • Analyse Cognos Reports and do gap analysis with Azure Cloud DB for available data.
    • Organize, extrapolate, and disseminate data to be used for migrating the Cubes (Legacy) to the Cloud DB


    • SQL Query Implementation in PowerBI
    • Transformation of raw data into meaningful insights
    • Replication of Cognos Reports into PowerBI.


    • Validation of PowerBI Reports results with Cognos Reports results
    • Complete the process of UAT by sharing the PowerBI Dashboard Links to Testing Team
